High School X-treme Mixed Doubles Tournament

Written by Jason Wynn

16 student athletes from local area high schools paired off in mixed doubles competition last month in the first annual High School X-treme Mixed Doubles Tournament, hosted by St. Mary's College Tennis.  The pairing of Rachel Land and Tyler Collins came away with top-honors, with Marissa Romanek and Josh Levitas posting a 2nd place finish.

Be sure to check out more photos from the event after the break!

This past weekend 245 players and 30 teams from across the Mid-Atlantic came together to compete at the 1st Mid-Atlantic Jr. Team Tennis Winter Wildcard Invitational, sponsored by Reston Shirt and Graphic Company, Inc., held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. The wildcard invitational was a pilot tournament that was created to attract new players to Jr. Team Tennis. The round robin tournament style gave teams a chance to experience the JTT team format in a shortened format rather than playing in a four week local season. Teams competed in eight divisions for a chance to win a wildcard to their JTT Districts or States in July.

8 teams battled in the 18 & Under Intermediate division, split across two flights of four.  The St. Mary's based team, dubbed "The Avengers" and led by Coach Derek Sabedra, brought home a 3rd place finish in their flight.
